Working with a remote community to implement a series of technologies to address water scarcity and food insecurity.

CHALLENGES

Many remote communities in Southern Peru experience limited access to secure, clean water, which in turn contributes to food insecurity and nutritional challenges. Water resources are further reduced during the Peruvian dry season when rainfall on average is less than one inch per month. And climate change induced water scarcity is only expected to make conditions worse.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

SWB’s work in Chakiqpampa (“Chaki”) has focused primarily on increasing water availability to ameliorate many of the challenges that come with limited water access in a farming-based community. SWB began work in Chaki by constructing a water reservoir in an effort to increase water storage ability. SWB also began conducting household surveys to understand the community development goals. By gauging the baseline health of the community, SWB has been able to tailor projects to target the areas of greatest need. SWB’s past work included the installation of aquaponics systems. Focus is now shifting to the creation of decentralized water storage and irrigation systems. SWB will also continue to promote community engagement and capacity building.

OUR IMPACT

Project activities aim to reduce food and water scarcity, improve water management, and increase agriculture yields. The water reservoir SWB constructed increases Chaki’s capacity for water storage, the installed aquaponics systems promote efficient water use, and future irrigation work targets more reliable and efficient crop yields—to enhance nutrition and provide greater economic stability. Chaki projects demonstrate technologies that offer more efficient water management and sustainable agricultural practices.

Aquaponics

By circulating water to produce fish and vegetables year round, the aquaponics system improves food security in a water efficient manner.

Water Storage

Decentralized water storage units prevent evaporation typically experienced by reservoirs. The ability to move storage units allows for more efficient water allocation.

Drip Irrigation

Delivering water directly to plant roots, the system will minimize water losses to wind, runoff, and evaporation.
